Introduction

Hello! I’m Allison Olin, and I’m a junior studying Computer Engineering here at OU. I’m the secretary of the OU Robotics Club, as well as the secretary of OU Women in Electrical and Computer Engineering (WECE).

I think the coolest thing about me is that I have a twin brother, Jack. He’s awesome! He is studying theater and economics at Northwestern University. My favorite things to watch him do are improv and sketch comedy, two of his greatest talents. I’ve always thought my brother’s a genius, and he’s the funniest person I know.

I have two dogs, Daisy and Cooper. Daisy is a spaniel mix and my fourteenth birthday present. She is for sure the best gift I’ve ever received! She didn’t grow very much, and she looks the same as she did the day we brought her home, so she’s like an eternal puppy. Cooper is a golden retriever and a goof. He’s only one year old, but he’s already as big as a moose. And clumsy. Over the years, my little dog got into the habit of sleeping on the back of furniture. Cooper, who is not little in any sense, observed this and also attempts to sleep on the back of furniture. I have seen him fall off the back of the couch many, many times, but he’s very persistent.

I was born and raised in Colorado, and I love it there! There are so many fun things to do at any time of the year, and the climate is perfect. Last summer, I interned at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, CO, working on software to incorporate system intelligence into big data management lab-wide. This upcoming summer and fall, I will be doing a co-op at HP in Fort Collins, CO, and I’m very excited to return to my home state for a whole semester.

  1. Hi Allison! I really enjoyed your introduction, the Robotics club sounds really interesting! Glad I am not the only one that decided to include my pets in my introduction. Your doggies are so cute and I can tell you really love them. I bet its pretty funny watching Cooper try to fit on the back of the furniture. My boyfriend grew up in Colorado and I am hoping I get to visit soon since I have never been there. Any recommendations on some must see places there?

  2. Hi Allison! It's so awesome you have a twin! I've always wondered what it was like to have a twin. Are you guys identical? Also your dogs are really cute especially Daisy, can't keep my eyes off her picture!

    1. Oops, think my comment was a bit short so I'll add more. So you're from Colorado, which city? I've always wanted to go to Denver, I heard it is beautiful there. The only time I been to Colorado and that was for snowboarding in Breckenridge. Do you like snowboarding? I really want to check out Denver sometime.

  3. Wow, computer engineering? That must be tough. I took Python as my programming language for OU and I struggled through it, I don't think I could do anything like computer engineering! I think it’s awesome that you have a twin brother, but it must be hard being away from him for college. I loved the story about your big dog trying to sleep on the back of the couch like the little one, he sounds like such a dork and I think it would be hilarious to see. I hope you have an awesome semester!

  4. Allison, first off, I am so jealous that colorado is your home state! I have absolutely loved every time that I have gone there. Although the majority of my time when I go is spend in Colorado Springs, so it's easy to enjoy! Your dogs are adorable as well. I am impressed with how involved you are on campus! I focus the majority of my time into one organization, and I still feel overwhelmed! I hope that you have a great semester!

  5. OH MY GOODNESS!! Your dogs are soooo adorable!! I love that Cooper tries to lay on the back of furniture and fails because I have a dog that does that too! She saw the cats doing it and decided it would be a good idea, of course she's a sheltie and only weighs 23 pounds, so she doesn't fall off as often as I imagine Cooper does, but it's really amusing when she does!

  6. Hi Allison! My mom graduated with an electrical engineer degree. She has been a software engineer for the last 25 years, and just recently got a position as an electrical engineer with a software emphasis. It is never too late to get the perfect position! I always wished I had a twin. Your brother sounds like a lot of fun! Oh My Goodness! I have a corgi that loves to lay on the back of my furniture too. It actually drives me insane, but she just looks too cute to make her get down.

  7. Allison your dogs look awesome. That is very cool of your brother to be going to Northwestern, I always wanted to go there but ended up at OU which I can say worked out for the best. Sounds like you know pretty much exactly what you want to do in life which is always good to hear! Amazing how many people have absolutely no idea at our age.

  8. Oh, the Robotics Club: that sounds so cool, Allison! And that is so funny about your big dog trying to imitate the little dog, ha ha. Goldens are so sweet; even when they are being goofballs, they are charming. And I'm guessing that your improvisational brother is someone you will be able to turn to if you are not sure what to do for a story: people who do improv can come up with a fifty story ideas in a minute... a valuable talent for the theater AND for life!!! I hope you will enjoy the class. :-)

  9. Allison,

Wow! I'm a history major, so engineering is way out of my league. But I think that is awesome that you are passionate about it and so involved. I also have an obsession with my dogs (I have two yellow labs), and I enjoy meeting people who share a love for dogs. I love visiting Colorado! You're so lucky you got the chance to grow up there. Hope you have a good semester.

  10. I commend you on choosing Computer Engineering as a major! That is a difficult field to go into. That is so cool that you have a twin brother and you two are doing completely DIFFERENT things as a career goal. I about died when I saw your images of the cutest dogs ever!! Daisy seems like such a little spoiled cutie! Colorado seems like such a fun place to live, especially compared to Oklahoma. Congrats on your co-op, that is a really great opportunity!!! Hope all goes well with that!

  11. Ok I'm officially obsessed with your dogs!! That's so awesome that you have an eternal puppy. Also, that picture of you and your twin is absolutely adorable. I was actually in theatre myself and used to do improv. I miss it a lot. Colorado is so beautiful, I'm jealous that you get to be there for an entire semester. I hope you have a great semester!

  12. Hi Allison, so it seems like you and I major in completely opposite areas. However, I seem to really connect with those people and my conversations with them tend to be quite enlightening. I too enjoy Colorado! So much so that I will be there this spring break.
I’ll be traveling to Denver to do some hiking/cycling/kayaking (I’m unsure about the latter). I would imagine that growing up somewhere like Denver would make childhood that much more fun!

  13. Allison! Your major sounds like it could be pretty interesting but very hard! I also have a brother that is very smart and I look up to. He is in his fourth year of medical school and I am so proud of him! Daisy and Cooper are too cute! I have such a soft spot for dogs! My dogs also love to lay and sleep on the back of furniture; I definitely think it is a dog thing. Good luck this semester.

  14. Hi Allison! How amazing that you have a twin brother; I’ve always wished I had a twin sibling. Because I study Biology, I believe that twins are typically alike in most aspects so if he is super smart and funny then I’m sure you are too! Your dogs are super cute. How awesome it must be to have an eternal puppy. I have a pomeranian and she is only 8 lbs. I hope to visit colorado someday, as I have heard many wonderful things about the state! Congratulations and good luck next semester at your internship!

  15. Hi Allison! My little brother, he's twelve, is a member of the botball team at his middle school and he absolutely loves designing or building anything robotics. He's a pretty smart kid. I have always wanted to visit Colorado and I'm hoping to plan a family trip sometime within the next few years. Your doggies are cute! I wish I could have a dog like I used to while growing up, but unfortunately my hubby is allergic to most household pets. The poor guy can't even step into his own parent's house for a minute before his eyes begin to water and he starts to sneeze. I think it is wonderful that you have chosen to major in Computer Engineering. Good luck with your studies this semester!

  18. Hey Allison! I think it is neat that you have a twin brother. I have always wondered what it's like to have a twin! Although, many people think me and my siblings are triplets because we all look so much alike. Your dogs are so cute! I have always wanted some kind of spaniel. I dog sit for a lady when I'm in Norman, and she has two cavalier king charles spaniels. They are too adorable! I hope your semester is going well!

  19. Hey Allison! I think it's really cool that you're studying computer engineering--I could never do any of that stuff, but I think it would be interesting to learn. That picture of you and your twin is adorable! It seems like the two of you are really close, although two very different majors! Ahh, I love your dogs! Both of them seem super sweet! Also, I absolutely love Colorado! Probably one of my favorite places to go, because there really is always something to do. Good luck this upcoming summer and fall with HP!

Computer engineering sounds like a tough major! I'm sure it keeps you busy! I think it is super cool that you have a twin! I always wondered what that would be like! Your dogs are super adorable! That is so cool that you are from Colorado. One of my close friends wants to move there when she gets done with school. Good luck with your internship and your future plans!

  23. Hey Allison! Computer Engineering?? That’s awesome! That is probably something that I could never do, but I am glad that there are people who are good with that! I LOVE your dogs! I am a huge dog lover, so I enjoy seeing pictures of everyone’s babies! I also love Colorado and would like to live there someday, if I end up moving from Texas! I hope you have a great semester!

  24. Hello Allison,

It is so wonderful that you have a twin brother that you love and appreciate so much! I could certainly say the same about my sister, but she is older than me by 11 years. Somehow we are still twin souls :) she's the yang to my yin.

Your dogs are precious! I love that you say Daisy is the best gift you have ever received. Animals truly are the greatest gift to humankind, if you ask me ;)

Colorado is awesome! I love visiting any part of Colorado, and would love to live there someday. You are soo lucky to have grown up in such a beautiful state!

It sounds like you are on the right track in life and have your priorities set. Kudos to you for being so active with your technology skills; I imagine your resume looks fantastic already! Also, I love that you interned for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. What a great purpose!

Good luck to you and enjoy the rest of the semester! :)

  26. Hey Allison,

I cannot believe it is already the end of the semester and I am just now reading your blog! That is so awesome that you are a computer engineering major! It is not very often that you meet a girl who is into computer science type of stuff. Also, Colorado sounds amazing! I have never been myself, but it definitely sounds like a fun place from the way you describe it.
